Bayfield, H. W. (1860) The St. Lawrence Pilot, comprising Sailing Directions for the Gulf and River. Vol. II. (4th edition). Hydrographic Office, Admiralty. J. D. Potter, London.

Henry Bayfie/d lb. 7795, d. 7885) spent his entire career from the age of eleven in the Royal Navy. Born in Hull, Eng/and, he had seen action as a youth in the Napoleonic Wars. After being transferred to Canada in 1874, he was assigned two years later to hydrographic survey work , for which he showed a particular proficiency. After carrying out a major survey of the Great Lakes, he was appointed by the Admiralty in 7827 to conduct a survey of the St. Lawrence River and its gulf, a fourteen year assignment. He was to publish the results in three stages before revising and publishing the entire work as The St. Lawrence Pilot in 7860. From 7847 Bayfield lived in Charlottetown and it was during the 78408 that he carried out his detailed survey of the island ’s coastline. The St. Lawrence Pilot contains almost no reference to the island 's forests, the only sites singled out being the two islands in Hillsborough Bay presumably because of their importance in navigating in and out of Charlottetown harbour. However, his published charts of the island ’3 coastline do show in exact detail the boundaries of the woodland in coastal areas. Bayfie/d retired from active survey work in 7856 and continued to live quietly in Charlottetown until his death in 7 885.
