Moose on the island?

Neil McCa/Ium: In 1830 a number of Hogs remained in the woods all winter living on Beech Nuts.

Peter Praught: Yes to a great extent and it was difficult to catch them at the beginning of winter.

Char/es Ramsay: Fattened. John B. Schurman: I know hogs used to get very fat on Beach nuts but the meat was very soft, not so good as that which was fattened at home. I never

knew of any great difficulty in getting them home.

William Sencabaugh: 50 years ago hogs fatned on beachnuts. whar wild, they catch them with dogs when the snow was about foot Deep.

Peter Sinott: Hogs largely fed on nuts 50 year & 20 years ago. Easily caught with potatoes.

[no name # 1]: Hogs would generally come home about Christmas quite fat from beach nuts but their flesh would be softer and not as good as when hand— fed some few would be pretty wild and difficult to catch.

John Brooks: I never heard of any moose being seen on the Island.

Dr. John Mackieson: I never heard of Moose being seen on the Island.

Ewen McMillan: Have found their horns while clearing New Land.

William Sencabaugh: I never saw of them. I have found thair horns several times. They were all gone before my Day.
