McSwain, J. & Bain F. (1891) List of Prince Edward Island Plants. ”Published by the Natural History Society of Prince Edward Island July 1891 8 pages. / have extracted below all of the native trees from a list of the Latin names of 430 vascular plants occurring on Prince Edward island, that was printed as an eight page pamphlet by the Natural History Society of Prince Edward Island in 78.9 7. The authors of the pamphlet were John McSwain and Francis Bain, two members of the Society. Francis Bain is well known in island natural history (see Bain 1890), but / have no information on John McSwain other than that contained in Erskine. The list includes all of the native trees except jack pine, ironwood, and — what can only be an oversight, since they are listed in Bain’s 7890 Natural History of the island — the two ash species. There were two additions to the list printed as single sheets in 7894 and 7899, though these did not contain any of the missing trees. The list is a sign of the growing interest in the island '3 flora and the botanical competence achieved by local persons at the end of the nineteenth century. By the way, the copy that / consulted was a photocopy of an autographed original that Francis Bain had sent to an American botanist who subsequently donated it to the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University. A copy is now available at the UPE/ Library. REFERENCE: Erskine, D. S. (1960) The Plants of Prince Edward island. Publication 1088, Canada Department of Agriculture. p. 7.
