combined it with Kenny's bakery which is now known as Mrs. Kenny 's Bake Shoppe. Our business grew to a point where we needed some after school part time help. In most cases we hired students of our customers which proved to be quite satisfactory. Some of the families included the Tierneys, Mullallys, Liptons, MacDonalds, Worths and the Readys. The Readys lived across the street from the store. The father, John Ready Sr. (Spy Ready's father) was a plumber by trade. He was also deeply involved in the Conservative Party as a poll captain and before each election he and my father would get into a friendly debate about political issues. I remember vividly Mr. Ready showing off in front of my dad a hundred, two dollar bills which he was allocated to pass out to his workers and supporters to ensure that they voted Conservative. In those days it was quite common for both Liberals and Conservatives to pass out a two dollar bill or a pint of rum to entice you to vote for their party. I could never understand the logic of that. Some would take the two dollars and the rum from both sides and vote whatever way they wanted. One of the chores that the part time workers would do, was to sort out the beverage bottles. We paid 1 cent for the small bottles and 5 cents for the large bottles. Spy Ready was a frequent visitor to our basement. On this particular day when we were supposed to be cleaning the basement and sorting out bottles, we were doing more clowning around than working. At that time there was a popular comic character by the name of Spy Smacher who used to jump from building to building seeking evil doers in the community. When Jack "Spy" Ready was clowning around and jumping over boxes in our basement, my brother Joe commented, "Here comes Spy Smacher" and the name Spy stuck with him ever since. Spy's full name was John Edward Ready the same as his father's. He was often called Jack or Spy. He went to Queen Square School and Prince of Wales College but was more interested in sports. He excelled in baseball and hockey and was inducted into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame. He served on city council while I was Mayor and later served two terms as Mayor from 1987-1992. It's amazing how many people I grew up with that had nick names. Some that come to mind were, Gump Gillis, Rat Howard, Shrimp Martin, Mousie Weatherbie, Shoot 41
