Cyril Gilbert Callaghan was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on March 24, 1927, the youngest child of Julia Ann Trainor and Malachias Callaghan. He obtained his early education at Queen Square School in Charlottetown. He attended St. Dunstan’s University where he was known as “Bun”. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, pre-med. While he was a student at St. Dunstan’s he played football on the first team and won a “D” in that sport. He loved the game of rugby. He was a tough, sure tackler and a spirited team player. He would often lift the spirit of the other players with his humorous remarks. He had the ability to laugh at himself.
