John E. Cash Deceased

John was born June 23rd, 1927 the eldest of six children (five sisters)of John and Beatrice (Murphy) Cash. He attended elementary schools in Graham’s Road, Norboro and Emerald, finalizing his high school in Kinkora and St. Dunstan’s. He continued with university courses at St. Dunstan’s and graduated with a BA. in 1951. Thereafter, he entered Saint Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto where he completed his training and he was ordained in 1955.

John had a very interesting employment career prior to his entering the Priesthood. In the early days he was newsboy on the CN trains that passed through Emerald Junction, This was followed by tobacco picking in Ontario, painting and decorating in Toronto and summer work at the Jasper Resort in Alberta.

His long term work was the 44 years he spent as a priest in the Diocese of Charlottetown. In addition to this he was, for 14 years, a Reserve Chaplain with the RCAF in Summerside, PEI , and was replacement Chaplain with the Army in Gagetown, NB and in Halifax, NS.

John’s athletic prowess brought many awards and honors to his name. He was an exceptionally gifted runner and his fierce determination to succeed in this melieu brought him many awards while at St. Dunstan’s and while a member of the Abegweit Athletic Club in Charlottetown. He was Senior All Around Athlete at St. Dunstan’s in 1947, 1948,1949 1950-51, and Senior Track and Field in 1950. As a member of the Abbies Relay Team he contributed greatly to their championships in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1950. Perhaps the most remembered athletic success by SDU students was John’s famous run and score in a rugby game the Saints played against Mount A. in Nov, 1948.
