Born on April 13, 1930 in Miscouche, P.E.I., George was the fifth of seven children, five of them boys, from the marriage of Thomas Keefe and Eveline Holland. Following his father’s accidental death in 1934, the family gradually dispersed. George remained living in Miscouche until he completed Grade 1 and then moved to Glencorradale, a community northwest of Souris. There was no school in this district and he was unable to continue his education until he moved to Charlottetown in 1939. He then entered Grade 2 at Queen Square School at age nine. He was 21 on graduation from S.D.U. in 1951, having caught up by taking grades 7-8-9 in one year at Thistle and Shamrock School under Letitia Graham, and skipping Grade 12 afier taking Grades 10 and 11 at Kinkora High School from the Sisters of Saint Martha. They pointed him towards St. Dunstan’s in 1947.
After S.D.U., George took courses towards his MA. in English at the University of Ottawa. He also obtained his high school teaching certificate from the Ontario College of Education, Queen’s University Campus.
George married Jeannine LeBlanc in 1956 and they had five children: David, Philip, Donald, Vivian and Paul. David was an honours student in civil engineering at the time of his death in 1982 in a skiing accident. Philip, who attended Carleton University, is a sales and marketing account manager in Vancouver and the father of two
