Bert was born in Montague, P.E.I. on January 26th, 1926 the first of four children from the marriage of Gertrude Maclnnis and James Lannan. He completed his elementary schooling in Montague, attended high school there and in Souris before moving on to SDU in 1943.

Upon completion of Grade X11, he joined the RCAF, but later transferred to the army and went overseas. Bert returned to St. Dunstan’s in the autumn of 1945 but after a routine chest x-ray was believed to have tuberculosis and was confined to the provincial sanitarium for a year “flat on my back”, as he put it. On his release, he taught school at Peakes Station for one year, reentering SDU in September 1947.
