Kay was born in Boston, Mass. on December 2, 1925 to Ernest and Margaret (MacDonald) Roche. Her parents, both Island born, decided to return to their native province and in July 1930 took up residence in Georgetown. Kay attended elementary school there and went on to complete high school at Prince of Wales College where she also received her teacher’s license.

She returned to Georgetown to teach for four years at Georgetown High School; two years as vice-principal and the following two years as principal. Her involvement in volunteerism began at this time. She taught catechetics, was active in the Catholic Womens League, and a leader in organizing the First Georgetown Company of Girl Guides. Kay came to St. Dunstan’s in the fall of 1948 and graduated with a BA. in 1951. While at St. Dunstan’s she served on the staff of the Red and White, was a member of the M.I.D.L., and took part in dramatics and Glee Club activities.

Kay was employed by the Department of National Defense at AVM G.A. Johnson School at Summerside for the school term 1951-1952. She returned to teaching with the Unit Three School Board at Sherwood Elementary School, Sherwood, P.E.l. for the years 1969 to 1974. And following one years leave of absence, began a 9 year teaching stint at Prince Street School, Charlottetown, from 1975 to 1984.
