Donald was born April 28”, 1929, into a family of eleven children, which included three sets of twins, to John A. and Emma Mae (Caswell) MacPhee. He attended elementary school and high school in Summerside, P.E.I.. and entered St. Dunstan’s in 1947 in freshman year, graduating with a BSc in 1951.
Donald was accepted into Medical School at McGill University and completed two years in the study of medicine, then transferred into dentistry, graduating with a DDS in 1956.
Don joined the Canadian Armed Forces -Dental Corp (RCDC), during the last two years of university. His years in service brought him to Camp Borden, North Bay (RCAF), Downsview -Toronto (RCAF), Germany with the 4mBrigade (Army) working with the First Battalion Canadian Guards and Black Watch. After being transferred back to Canada, Don was posted to Kingston Ontario, as oral surgeon consultant to the Canadian Forces hospital; a position he held from 1964 to 1967.
He was approached to set up and promote a dental practice within Kingston General Hospital; probably the first in Canada to enjoy a private practice within the confines of a general hospital while providing dentistry to staff and in-patients .He retired as Dental Director fiom the hospital after forty one years in dentistry, thirty of which were at the Kingston General Hospital. During his later years he altered his focus from surgery to prosthodontics and restricted his practice primarily to complete and partial dentures especially the prosthetic component of implant dentistry
In 1956, Don married Aileen McCarthy and they became the parents of five children:
Cindy is married to Gabe Bacco, a dentist in Toronto and has two children; Andrew and Jamie Lynn.
Maurine is married to Halirn Khouri, lives in Ottawa, and manages an Enviro Trends store. Maurine has four children including one set of twins; Kristian, Jackson, Jamieson, Dorrion.
