John Elmer MacPhee Perley -Rideau Veterans Health Centre Ottawa, Phone: (613) 820-7921 E-mail: jrmac@cyberus.ca Elmer was born on October 8th, 1925, in Souris , Prince Edward Island the oldest of 4 children of Agnes (Mahar) and Peter MacPhee . He attended elementary school and high school in Souris . He left home to work in Halifax at age 15 in order to help his family financially due to his father being diagnosed with a brain tumor. His father was the first patient in Canada to get a successful operation to remove a brain tumor. Elmer joined the Navy as a signalman and was assigned to a frigate which was to escort a convoy to Mumansk, Russia. Luckily, the war ended and Elmer was able to return home. He began his university education at St. Dunstan's in 1945 and graduated with a B.Sc . in 1951. While at St. Dunstan's , Skinny as he was called, was active in athletics and was Humor Editor of the Red and White in his final year. He served also as chairman of the Thursday socials in his final year; a position that required him to arrange for the live music bands, chaperones and collection of the entrance fee (10 cents) which ensured the continuation of this valued social activity. During the summers he worked picking tobacco and served three years in the C.O.T.C . which earned him a Captaincy in the Canadian Reserve Army .
