Len had a long career in teaching: from high school at Loyola High in Montreal, Campion High School in Regina, to philosophy at Kings College at University of Western Ontario and at Loyola College in Montreal.
Len spent eleven years in the Jesuits and some of his teaching career was spent in schools and colleges that were managed by that Order. He also worked in admissions at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and chauffeured handicapped children for various schools in Montreal.
On December 27th, 1966 Len married Isabel Gowan. They became the parents of three children: Stephanie, the mother of one child lives in Montreal, Carla, who has two children also lives in Montreal, and Suanne, who lives in Vancouver.
His marriage to Isabel, the birth of his three daughters and the birth of his grandchildren are the high points of Len’s life. He also has continued to demonstrate the love of learning that so marked his time at St. Dunstan’s. As Len says himself; the discovery of a great mind at work in a book entitled “Insight: A Study of Human Understanding” by Bernard Lonergan a Jesuit philosopher has been of tremendous importance to him since he first discovered it in 1957. “I’m still drinking from that fountain”
His most memorable recollection of St. Dunstan’s was the arrival on the campus of Brendan O’Grady - specifically his first class with us. “ I thought he was of breath of fresh air. I’ll never forget his answer to someone’s question about how long an essay he had assigned us should be. He said it should be like a woman’s dress: long enough to cover the subject and short enough to attract attention. At the time it seemed such a daring analogy to make”.
