Ernest and Roslyn (Simms) Smith of New York City welcomed a seventh child to their family, aptly naming him Ernest, on Nov. 6th, 1922. Ernie received his early elementary education in the “City” and High School in the Bronx, NY. His family moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, while Ernie served in the Marines and began his university education in Prince Edward Island.
He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and served with distinction in the Pacific theater of operations until 1946. He entered SDU in 1947 and graduated with a B.Sc. in 1951. The University of Ottawa, St. Patrick’s College School of Social Work, became the next educational institution on Ernie’s agenda and he graduated from this University with a Masters Degree in Social Work in 1954 after two years study and practice.
Emic began his social work career with Catholic Charities in Brooklyn, N.Y., working for Catholic Family Services, Archdiocese of New York. He became Director of Social Services for emotionally impaired adolescents. He retired from his position with Catholic Charities in January 1990. He also worked part time with the Mental Health Clinic at Goshen , New York, and was Director of Evening Division Rockland County Community College, Nyack, New York Satellite. In his spare time he operated a private practice in Goshen, New York.
He was awarded the Mayor Koch City of New York Community Award, the Orange County Mental Health award, and the CYO Award.
