WtpLy 2. Summer of 1915 After Eleonore 's death, things changed in the Doucette household. Baby Cyril went to live with Grandmere and Grandpere Poirier. When Alphy asked his father why Cyril had to stay with Grandpere and Grandmere Poirier, his father told him, "That's just the way it is now." Alphy continued to go to school, but in the evenings and on Saturdays he and Edmond would follow their father in the field, or in the barn trying to help with the chores. During the summer, when there was no school, he and Edmond would go to the shore to help Henri fish. Their sister Josephine spent more time at Grandmere and Grandpere Doucette's. Alphy remembers spending a hot summer day at the shore with his father and Edmond. Alphy and Edmond wandered off by themselves, but they had not lost sight of their father on shore. They met up with some older boys. The boys started teasing Alphy and Edmond. Before they had time to react, one of the older boys picked up a flat fish and threw it at Edmond. Edmond had already turned heel and was running towards his father for safety, when the fish walloped him on the back. Alphy followed Edmond, but Edmond was running so fast it was all Alphy could do to keep up with his younger brother. They never looked back until they had reached Henri, who was now gathering up the fish nets for the day. Henri saw the boys running, and when they reached his side, asked Edmond, "What did you see, a ghost?" Edmond sputtered out, "There's a flat fish on my back." His father chuckled, "Let's see the fish." Edmond turned around. Henri told him, "No fish here."
