7. New Boots
As Alphy got older, he became more involved in helping his father on the farm. When Alphy was nine years old, his father decided it was time for Alphy to earn his keep. Alphy was taken out of school to help his father with the farm work. At nine years old, his formal education was already behind him.
Alphy felt very grown up indeed, helping his father on the farm, while the younger children went to school. He followed close behind his father and took extra big strides when he walked to keep up. The only problem was, he had outgrown his boots and the soles were coming undone. By the end of the day one boot had completely lost its sole, so Alphy had discarded his boots and was returning home in his bare feet.
Henri commented, “It’s about time you got some new boots.” He also added that he would make some arrangements to go to St. Louis on Saturday, as they would need supplies anyway. Alphy counted the days until Saturday — and when it came he was the first one to get out of bed.
Henri had arranged for the neighbour, Marie, to care for the younger children while he and Alphy went to St. Louis. However, Edmond had sensed Alphy’s excitement and had also awakened early. He wanted to go. Henri at first said no, Edmond would have to stay home, but Edmond persisted by crying. Finally Henri agreed to take him, too.
When they arrived at John Perry’s General Store, Henri chatted with some of the grown-up folks, and then proceeded to buy a supply of seeds and other items for planting. Both Alphy and Edmond waited patiently. Finally they checked the footwear at the back of the store. Alphy spotted a nice pair of men’s boots, as black as licorice.
