Reluctantly, Alphy put them on. To his dismay they fit. Henri told the clerk," I guess we'll take these." Alphy knew there would be no use in complaining; his father's mind was made up. Henri may have noticed the look of disappointment on Alphy's face, but he also knew that it would be several months before John would receive a new shipment of boots. They couldn't wait, planting season would soon be here with no time to delay. Henri paid for the supplies and the boots. Alphy reluctantly carried the boots under his arm, hoping that no one would notice him leave the store with a pair of ladies' boots. Edmond felt no need to be discreet, and wanted to let his father know that he, too, was upset. He wailed, "Why can't I get boots like Alphy?" Henri ignored the outburst and continued to carry the supplies out to the wagon. Both boys followed. As Alphy got into the wagon, he wished his boots did fit Edmond. Then he might get rid of them.
