JUpfy refusing to get into the wagon. Henri commented, "If you don't get in, then you will have to walk." He waited a brief moment, and then took the reins and the horse went forward in a slow trot. Alphy kept looking behind. Edmond was still crying, but had started to run behind the wagon. Soon he stopped crying, and began to run faster. Henri stopped the horse, and waited for Edmond. Edmond still refused to get in. Luckily, they were going only from the store to Grandpere Poirier's, who also lived in St. Louis . Once there, Alphy waited for Edmond. Finally he arrived, tired and defeated. Alphy remembers Edmond's sad little face, covered in dust with tear streaks down his cheeks. Grandmere Poirier offered him milk and cookies, but Edmond would not be consoled. It had been an unforgettable day. The following Saturday proved much more pleasant, as Grandmere and Grandpere Poirier came to visit with a new pair of boots for Edmond. Alphy had never seen him quite so excited, before or since then. 17
