need to find a water hole. It had rained the night before, so there were lots of puddles in the yard. Alphy walked through every puddle he could find. It was amazing! His feet were still completely dry. Alphy wondered how deep he could actually go before getting wet. He went behind the barn, towards the woods - the land was more swampy here. When Alphy returned from the woods his feet were still completely dry. Alphy started walking towards the barn. He noticed the trough where the livestock came to drink. He thought this would be the perfect test for his boots. He stepped into the trough with both feet. To his surprise, the water came in over his boots, and he could feel his feet getting soaked. Alphy quickly got out of the trough. It was too late - his boots were overflowing with water. They were water¬ proof, but there was a limit. Alphy had reached this limit, and decided that he would not try this again, as he had to wait a full day and a half for his boots to dry! As time went on Alphy realized that his father's interest in Mary Anne was getting quite serious... as now they were talking marriage in October. He didn't quite know what to make of this news. Of one thing he was certain - Mary Anne would never take the place of his mother. Alphy didn't talk very much of his mother, but whenever he thought about her, he still felt a deep ache in his heart. Now Alphy wasn't sure if he could accept another woman in his father's life. Life had changed since Alphy's mother had died, and in some ways he had adjusted to the changes. Still he wasn't sure about this union between his father and Mary Anne , as this seemed like such a betrayal to his own mother. He didn't really understand why his father wanted to marry again. In October 1917, Henri and Mary Anne were married and, once again, there were changes in the Doucette household. 22
