Jllpfu, 10. Mary Anne Mary Anne was approximately twenty-seven years old when she married Henri. Henri was thirty-seven years old. Mary Anne had a child named Wilfred, from a previous relationship. Wilfred stayed with his grandparents when Mary Anne married Henri. Together, Mary Anne and Henri had six children - George, Leo, Freddy, Ernest, Louise (who died during infancy) and Laurette. When Mary Anne and Henri married, Alphy was ten years old. He was still grieving for his mother and was not sure about having a new woman in the family. Mary Anne had taken on three young children, while still grieving for her child, Wilfred. It is unclear whether it was circumstances, or a personality conflict but there quickly developed a tension between Alphy and Mary Anne . The rift between them lasted throughout the rest of Alphy's childhood. It was only in his adult years, after his father's death, that Alphy and Mary Anne were able to settle their differences. Sometimes Mary Anne would speak about Wilfred to the children, and she would tell them that, "Wilfred wouldn't behave like that." This happened especially at times when she would ask the children to do something which they resented, for example if they didn't want to go to bed when they were told. Alphy felt that in Mary Anne 's opinion he could never be as good as Wilfred. He had only heard good things about Wilfred. Mary Anne would tell the children, "Why can't you be more like Wilfred?" Then one day Wilfred came for a visit for the day. That day the children witnessed Mary Anne and Wilfred have an argument - he didn't do what he was asked, and when Mary Anne persisted, he refused to listen to her. 23
