7M 30. The Wedding
Alphy and Margurita were married on August 5, 1935 in Palmer Road Church. It was a beautiful summer day. As was the custom, they were married early in the morning before breakfast. The priest who married them was Father Walsh. The bridesmaid was Rita Allain, sister of the bride. The best man was Aubin Perry, cousin of the groom.
Margurita wore a light blue dress. Her hair came down in a cascade of golden curls. In Alphy’s words, “She was the prettiest bride that had ever stepped inside of Palmer Road Church.”
After the wedding Mass the bridal party went to Mary Anne’s, Alphy’s stepmother’s for breakfast. She had cooked a nice hot meal
for them.
After breakfast Alphy had made arrangements to take his bride out for a special treat. He had hired one of the neighbours, Nicolas Perry, to drive him and Margurita to St. Louis. Nicolas was the only person in DeBlois who owned a car, and he was happy to oblige. When they arrived at John Perry’s store, Alphy went in and bought a chocolate bar for his bride. Then they returned to DeBlois, to Emmanuel and Evangeline’s place. It was a joyous occasion— Alphy and Margurita were surrounded by friends and relatives who greeted them with best wishes and a few gifts. The family had prepared a meal for the newlyweds.
When everyone had finished eating, the kitchen furniture was pushed back, and the house party began. Emmanuel was an excellent: fiddle player. He played a soft melody for Alphy and Margurita, and then played some ‘toe tapping’ jigs. A fun evening was had by all. Alphy was especially jubilant - tonight he would lay with his
sweetheart.
The day after the wedding, Alphy and Margurita enjoyed time together in their living quarters above the machine shop and forge.
