the country school ( North) where he attended. His responsibility included going to school early in the morning to light the potbelly stove before the teacher and other students arrived. He also did some of the cleaning after school. Early in the morning, before the rest of the Doucette family were up, Dennis went to school. Alphy had given Dennis an additional job. Dennis would also light the kitchen stove at the Doucette household each morning before going to school. For this, Alphy paid Dennis a weekly allowance. On this particular week, Alphy had forgotten to give Dennis his allowance. Dennis had been waiting for his allowance all week. He got up early, as usual, and lit the fire in the kitchen stove. He was on his way to school when Margurita got up. Before leaving, Dennis seemed to have a second thought; he came back to the kitchen, and scribbled a note on a piece of paper and put it under his father's plate (Alphy always sat at the same place at the table). Then Dennis left for school. Margurita had prepared breakfast, and had the tea made before Alphy came downstairs. Alphy got ready for work, while the younger children got ready for school. The family then sat down for breakfast. Alphy ate his breakfast, without noticing the note tucked under his plate. When he had finished eating, Alphy pushed back his plate. It was then that he saw the note. He read it out loud. It was written in big bold letters "PAY YOUR BILL". Alphy commented, "What is this?" Margurita smiled and told him that Dennis had left the note there for him. Alphy remembered that he had not paid Dennis his allowance. He chuckled. Dennis received his allowance when he returned home from school that day. 101
