55. Joan Wants a Biscuit By 1963 the youngest child, Joan had started school. Joan was a bit of a tomboy and, for the most part, would prefer to stay out of school and play with her best friend, Bobby Boudreau from next door. Bobby was one year younger than Joan, so he had not started school yet. Bobby was Joan's first cousin.* When Joan was just in grade one, she had already learned to play hooky. The Doucette children always walked to school each day. The distance to school was approximately one quarter of a mile. One morning, Joan had lagged behind the other children on their way to school. She met up with her friend, Bobby and decided to go and play at his place, rather than go to school. Both Bobby and Joan played in the wooded area, but by mid-afternoon Joan was hungry. She didn't want to go home as she knew her mother would send her to school. The Boudreau household had a steep stairway going to the back entrance. Joan hid underneath the stairway, and asked Bobby to go to her place for a snack for her. They had not really thought things out, as no doubt Margurita would ask questions. Margurita was in the pantry at the time. She had just taken some biscuits out of the oven and had placed them on a plate underneath the open window in the pantry. Bobby could smell the steaming biscuits as he approached the house. He came to the window, and tried to reach the biscuits, but they were beyond his reach. Margurita happened to look out the window at the same time. When Bobby saw Margurita , he stopped in his tracks. He paused for a moment unsure of what to say. * Bobby's mother, Lorraine is sister to Margurita . Lorraine married Joe Boudreau , and they lived next door to the Doucette family. The Boudreau home was situated in the same location where Dennis and Brenda Doucette's home is at present. 107
