beside Ivan, waiting for his master to play with him. But to Hunter’s dismay, Ivan just kept running with the sleigh.

Finally Hunter got tired of trying to get Ivan’s attention and plopped himself down on a snow bank. He continued to watch Ivan, with his sad puppy dog eyes.

By early evening Ivan was exhausted and ready for bed. Eileen, too, fell asleep earlier than the usual time. After the children had been fed and tucked in their beds, Margurita tidied up the house. She hung up the coats, in the ‘wash’ room, which was the designated area for the laundry.

Before going to bed, Margurita gave Hunter a molasses cookie. Hunter took it in his mouth, and laid down on the floor mat, where he always slept.

The next morning, when the family came downstairs, there were patches of red and white material strewn all across the floor. This is all that was left of Eileen’s coat. Hunter had torn it to shreds, even the fur trim.

Alphy scolded Hunter, “What did you do that for?” Hunter lowered his head, and looked up at Alphy with his sad puppy dog eyes.

Margurita told Alphy how the dog had watched Ivan hauling the sleigh with Eileen in it, and how Hunter had seemed upset over this. Alphy did not punish the dog. This was the one and only time that Hunter would ever destroy anything. But for Hunter, it was worthwhile getting scolded. Now he would have all of Ivan’s attention, as it would be a while before Eileen would get another coat
