blood, but he knew that Ivan required medical attention right away. Alphy braced himself for the drive to the hospital.

Alphy drove to the Western Hospital in the old Ford truck. He tried to put his full attention on the road, so not to pass out behind the wheel. When they arrived at the hospital, Alphy helped Ivan out of the truck. By now, both Ivan and Alphy were as white as sheets. Ivan felt his arm throbbing with pain.

Once in the hospital, Alphy thought, “I better go outside, before I faint.”

He started for the door, but Dr. Bander called him back. He told Alphy that he would need his help. Dr. Bander told Ivan to lay on the medical table, so that he could ‘set the bone’ (put it back in place). He commented, “This may hurt.”

Ivan appeared to be still in shock, but he did as the doctor asked, and got up on the table. Then Dr. Bander told Alphy that he would have to hold Ivan down while he set the bone. It took every ounce of will power for Alphy to do this. Ivan flinched with pain, but he didn’t cry. Finally the bone was set and Ivan’s arm put in a sling.

Alphy didn’t wait. While Dr. Bander was putting Ivan’s arm in asling, Alphy headed outside for some fresh air. He felt his knees getting weak. He sat down on the running board of the old Ford. He felt nauseated. It seemed like everything was whirling around him. Alphy thought he was going to faint and stayed there until Ivan came out. It was a little while before he could drive home.

Whenever they returned, Margurita told Alphy that he looked to be “in as bad a shape as the patient.”
