Presbyterianism in Summerside 1853-2003

Presbyterianism on Prince Edward Island in 1904, became the third minister in Richmond Bay Charge. After his departure in 1859 the charge remained vacant until 1862. During that time it was divided into Richmond Bay West and Richmond Bay East.

The Lot 16 and Summerside (Green’s Shore) congregations formed Richmond Bay East Charge while Lot 11, Victoria West, Tyne Valley, and Lot 14 formed Richmond Bay West Charge. The latter charge remained vacant until 1865. In 1862 Rev. William R. Frame became the first minister inducted into Richmond Bay East Charge. He remained until 1872. During his ministry the first Summerside Presbyterian Church was built in 1865.

The Summerside congregation disjoined from Richmond Bay East Charge in 1871 and created the new Summerside Charge. Lot 16 rejoined the reconstituted Richmond Bay Charge.

The story of our church begins with the ministries of Rev. John M. MacLeod (1853-1859), Rev. Robert S. Patterson (minister at Bedeque, 1826—1882), and Rev. William R. Frame (1862-1872).
