the need for more money if a new church were to be- come a reality, he was instrumental in arranging for a bequest of the MacKeivie property on Central Street to the church. The proceeds from the eventual sale of this property proved to be a major factor in maintain- ing a majority of congregational support to proceed with the building of a new church. Rev. Mr. Mackay’s dedicated efforts to replace the century-old church became his lasting legacy to Summerside Presbyterian Church.
THE NEW CHURCH 1965-1972

Mackay was succeeded by Rev. John S. McBride. Rev. Mr. McBride had served for over twenty years in the Presbytery of Montreal, including a ministry of nine— teen and a halfyears at Ephraim Scott Memorial Church. His most recent appointment had been at Chambly, Quebec, serving under the General Board of Missions.
In 1965 the Lois Bowness residence and property adjacent to the church was purchased. This property was obtained in anticipation of the possible future need for more land to erect a new church or extensively renovate the existing structure. The year of Rev. Mr. McBride’s arrival the MacKeivie property was transferred to Summerside Presbyterian Church and subsequently sold to Summerside School Board for the sum of $44 800.00.
