Presbyterianism in Summerside 1853-2003 Summerside Presbyterian Church Under Construction 1968 The design of the new Summerside Presbyterian Church was steeped in symbolism. The sanctuary was built in the shape of a ship; the aisles form a cross; and the three steps to the lectern and pulpit represent the Trinity. There were only three areas of white in the entire church: the background for the Alpha and Omega (the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet) on the lectern; the background for the Burning Bush on the pulpit; and the background for the Cross. These white backgrounds reflect the purity of the symbols they enclose. Although the background for the Cross has since been redesigned by the Celebrate 150 Commit- tee to include bright colours, the Cross still remains outlined in white.
