of the spoken word. The new Summerside Presbyterian Church was de-
signed to include a large assembly hall, a modern kitchen, washrooms, Sunday School classrooms, and a nursery. Rooms were incorporated into the interior design for adult study and discussion seminars, and programs for youth, young adults, and women. The main sanctuary was designed to comfortably seat about 350. There was office space, a Board and Session room, a minister’s study, a parlour, and a library. All of these amenities allowed for increased fellowship, education, and service in the church. A large walk-in vault for the storage and safekeeping of all church documents and records was also built. All meeting—rooms and offices used during the week were situated downstairs to effi- ciently maximize the use of heat rising to the sanctu- ary upstairs in winter; this reduced the overall heating costs for the building. As a service to the general pub- lic the church facility was made available to commu- nity groups.
The task of furnishing and completing the interior of the new church and the grounds was a monumental one. It was a wonderful accomplishment shared by all members of the congregation.
The design of Summerside Presbyterian Church had been executed with a great deal of thought and plan- ning, but an unfortunate situation later developed. The attractive white and blue glazed brick used in the ex- terior construction of the walls began to fail in the cold winter weather. The air space behind the brick, neces- sary for moisture escape, had been filled with mortar during construction to provide extra strength. The re-
