Presbyterianism in Summerside 1853-2003

endowed with individual qualities which when applied collectively proved to be very successful at a time when all—important change was necessary. Rev. Mr. Mackay was the visionary who foresaw the need for a new church; Rev. Mr. McBride assumed the role of builder; and Rev. Mr. Fourney’s charisma helped fill the sanctu— ary.

Rev. Robert J. Elford came to Summerside Presby— terian Church in 1982. It was understood in his call that he would be absent for ten months to participate in a fellowship program in Toronto. On Sept. 4, 1983, during Rev. Mr. Elford’s absence, Rev. Kathy Brownlee took over the charge on a part—time basis as Supply Minister. Rev. George Beals was appointed Interim Moderator. Rev. Mr. Elford was a talented musician, but his pastoral stay proved to be unsatisfactory to the church and congregation and he was replaced.

During Rev. Mr. Elford’s short stay a problem devel- oped in the impressive elevated facade or tower which rose high above the portico and main entrance to the sanctuary. In the early spring of 1982 the brick and mortar in the tower showed signs of deterioration and resulted in water leaks in the entry. This situation re- sulted in the tower having to be removed entirely. It was believed a recent earth tremor had initially cracked the facade and caused the problem.

Rev. Kathy Brownlee’s interim ministry at Summerside Presbyterian Church lasted until 1984. She endeared herself to the congregation during her short ministry and was missed by all when she left. Rev. Allan Paisley served briefly as Interim Moderator until the

arrival of Rev. Bert Vancook.
