Memorial stone to Jane Ann and Donald, parents of children, also in Mermaid Cemetery , PEL Alexander Athol McBeath #1 (1819 - 1888) only son of Donald and Elizabeth farmed at Rosevale with his father. Little is known as to what type of farming was carried on but they did raise some sheep and some poultry. As farmers in that era were reasonably self-sufficient, we presume that they also raised hogs for meat, and cattle for milk and meat. Horses were used for the farm work and for travelling and families were justly proud of their horses. According to Donald's will Alexander had a great responsibility to care for his sisters. The unmarried girls were to be provided for and, should they marry after Donald's decease, Alexander was to provide such clothing, furniture, etc. as had been given to the daughters already married. Donald surely had great faith in his son to leave him with such responsibility, there being, as before mentioned, nine sisters. Alexander's first wife, Eloise Robertson , died at age twenty-four years soon after they were married. Seven years after her death he married Ann Stewart . He would then be fifty-eight years of age. When Alexander and Ann were married in 1876, a new house was built with five bedrooms and twelve rooms in all. About this time, or maybe prior to this, a smaller house was built close by and the unmarried sisters lived there. The house which Alexander build for Ann is pictured in the 1880 Atlas. Alexander and Ann had six children, the youngest being only nine months old at the time the father died. Their son Alexander was only ten years of age at that time and he and his mother carried on the farming operation. Ann and her son Alexander must have been good managers because the farm prospered and several of the family were educated. One girl became a school teacher and two of the boys were engineers. The children of Alexander Athol McBeath and Ann Stewart are: Elizabeth Florence McBeath , Alexander Athol McBeath #2, Margaret Irene McBeath , Anne Blanche McBeath , Donald Blair McBeath , Royal Stewart McBeath . Elizabeth Florence McBeath (1877-1898), unmarried, was the first child born to Alexander and Ann McBeath. She was also the first child to be born in the new house. She attended school at Marshfield and was especially interested in music. The beautiful old piano in the McBeath home -38-
