Marshfield as I Remember from 1860 The MacFarlane family consisted of two sons, John A. and Robert and daughters (not listed). The James Robertson family who emigrated to this Island in 1818 and 1819 originally lived at Blair Athol , Perthshire, Scotland . The family removed to the city of some fifty miles distant in 1789 and consisted of then four sons: James, Alexander, Peter, and John and three daughters: Margaret, Jessie and Betsy. Shortly after locating in the city the latter daughter, a promising girl of about 17 years lost her life from being thrown from a runaway horse and the son John became ill later. The family belonged to the Robertson of Struan and was connected with "Clan Dounachaid" one of the famous clans of that day. The family in 1818 made arrangements to immigrate to the "new country" as Canada was then called and secured passage on a sailing vessel coming direct but owing to the illness of the son John they were obliged to cancel their passage and lose part of their fare. However, James Robertson being a man of purpose took with him his son Alexander, a lad of sixteen years and agreed for their fare in the schooner " St. Ann " sailing for Pictou, N.S. The captain agreed to land them on some part of P.E.I. The voyage was a somewhat exciting one for in mid-ocean they sighted the floating carcass of a whole whale which had apparently been harpooned and with some difficulty took it in tow and secured a quantity of blubber for which the father and son received £11 each as their share and accordingly they were landed in the Charlottetown Harbour opposite where the light house is situated on the 15 August, 1818. During the year the son John died which left the remainder of the family free to immigrate and in 1819 the mother Jean Millar of Methvin and sons James and Peter and daughters Margaret and Jessie arrived by a sailing vessel name unknown. In the meantime James Robertson and his son Alexander arranged for purchase of the Marshfield farm and set about clearing and setting up a house. Upon arrival of the family in 1819 they settled there and began plying his trade as shoemaker and from that beginning the Robertsons of Marshfield established themselves. A few years afterward a daughter Jane Ann was born to this happy couple the only one of the family born in the Province (sic. not likely.) This James Robertson Sr. died in 1842 while on a visit to his daughter Jessie who married Conrad Vickerson who then lived at Vernon River, Mrs. James Robertson Sr. ( Jean Millar ) died at Marshfield in 1837 and both are buried at the Five Mile House Burying Ground situated between the MacFarlane and Munn farms. James Robertson married Jean Millar . James the eldest son married Elizabeth Fergusson and their family consisted of one daughter Lizzie who married Neil Stewart of Dunstaffnage and had issue, son Edward and daughter Libbie. Alexander married Margaret Fergusson and had five daughters and eight sons. Peter married Christy Robertson and had three daughters and four sons. Margaret married Peter Forbes of Brackley Point and had one daughter and five sons. Jessie married Conrad Vickerson , Vernon River and had five sons and five daughters. Jane Ann married Robert Westacot and had one son, Louis, who along with his father enlisted in the American Army and was never after heard of. You will pardon the degression but in able to establish the relationship of the Fergussons of Craggan with the Robertsons of Marshfield may I say - about 1800 John Fergusson a widow emigrated to this Province with two sons James and Alexander. Mr. Fergusson was termed John Fergusson elder and they settled at on the farm known as " Craggan " sometime after he married Jessie Robertson a sister of James Robertson Sr. and they had issue of one son John who after marrying Miss Stewart of Appletree and their family consisted of Donald (Senator), Jane Helena and John A. the latter settling on the old homestead. John Fergusson elder and Jessie Robertson also had seven daughters. Elizabeth married James Robertson Marshfield . Margaret married Alex Robertson Marshfield . Janet married Donald McLaughlan Marshfield . Unknown left for New Zealand . Jessie (Isabella) married --?-- Scantlebury, Charlottetown . Unknown married -?- MacKinnon Highfield . Unknown. This ends the history of the James Robertson Family who emigrated to this Province 1818 and 1819. -150-
