or interfere with matters concerning others. He was a staunch Presbyterian and among the first members of that denomination at Marshfield . He had a brother who was known as "Scotch Sandy" and occupied the farm where the late John A. Stewart lived. His wife as I have said was Christy McLaughlan one of the general favourites of that district and was classed among the finest looking women in the district. She was not only pretty but nice as well and visiting her home we were made welcome. When the writer was a mere boy this Stewart family went through a trying ordeal. A daughter who was dearly beloved, after some time in sickness died and two sons who went bathing near on got beyond their depth and both drowned, and the three members of this happy family were buried in the one day, the funeral cortege leaving the home was one of the saddest sight --?-- by a large gathering of friends is still fresh in their memory and the noble Christian spirit evinced by their parents had a lasting effect on the community. The members of their family, all well known to the writer are: Margaret or Maggie as we called her married Christopher Owen of French Fort and their son is Wallace Owen, and as her second husband Mr. Bishop who purchased the Mutch property where Wallace Owen now resides. Mrs. Ludlow Jenkins of Marshfield was a daughter by the first marriage and there may have been others. Oh how we youngsters liked to see Maggie come on a visit for there was always lots of fun. Jane married Mr. Pierce of Road and one of their family was — ?-- Jno Pierce of the city. Elizabeth married Wm. I. Thompson of Dunstaff- nage and their son Herbert lives on their homestead (The farm formerly occupied by William MacDonald who went to Greek River ). Isabella married Wm. J. Gibson , Marshfield . Jessie who died a spinster. The sons as I remember them are: John A. who married Henrietta McLauchlan . He died recently leaving a widow and family living on the Scotch Sandy farm. James of Dunstaffnage who married a Miss. Scott, daughter of Alexander Scott , Harrington, she died recently leaving a family. Alexander McLaughlan was of a most friendly disposition and his work shop was always a pleasant place for us school boys to go. His wife, Barbara, daughter of John Fergusson , " Hillside " always made us welcome when going through her kitchen to reach her husbands workshop, and not being of a robust nature did not mix with any but her intimate friends who always held her in high esteem. In writing this I overlooked the grandfathers family on the Fergusson side, viz: John Fergusson " Hillside ". He married as his first wife Miss Jury a sister of John Jury who was a leading watch maker and jeweller for many years on , Charlottetown . The John Fergusson family comprised John who was styled "Long Jonnie" and he established the home where Wm. Warren lives, and married Sarah Hardy of York . John T is one of his sons. David who I think was first a school master and later a builder. Alexander a farmer he married Susanna Ferguson his cousin. The daughters of John Fergusson " Hillside " were: Ellen who married Thomas Hardy of York and later kept a boarding house in Charlottetown . Jane Mrs. John Gibson , Marshfield . Lizzie went to the United States. This John Fergusson 's homestead was located on the west side of the where Alexander Stewart Jr. lived. After the death of his wife and the sons left he sold the farm to Donald Stewart and he and his daughter removed to Charlottetown and he opened a store at--?- (where the Capitol Theatre now is) and finding that the business did not pay and his daughter leaving for the United States he closed up and removed to Marshfield and opened a store and did a thriving business. He married as his second wife Susan Heartz and some years after Mr. Fergusson removed to Wiltshire and died there. His son John bought the business and continued it for a short time when he disposed of it to W B. Robertson who sold out to Caleb H. Schurman who later built a store at Dunstaffnage and removed there. Submitted by Linda Harding
