St, Columba Presbyterian Church The Missionary Society group sent boxes of clothing to the port worker in Halifax for Greece, knitted vests for Malawi hospital and baby bonnets for the children. Financial support included: the hospital workers for the Presbyterian Church in Halifax , Deaconess Training School in Toronto , Mrs. Dickson in Formosa for the Leper Children , Penny Cans , and donations for on Later on, a Ladies Aid Auxiliary was started and joint meetings were held with the same membership as the Missionary Society. The Ladies Auxiliary provided: refreshments for fellowship time after the morning services; lunch after funerals, and bridal and baby showers; pot luck suppers and Christmas parties. Recently shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child were filled and donated. Also, grocery tapes are collected and given to the Upper Room. The joint meetings are held ten months of the year, with July and August omitted. These two groups continue to provide a vital service to the Church. The Sunday School This Church had Sunday School classes for many years with Talmage Foster as superintendent and teacher. There were up to 35 children in attendance at that time with several other Sunday School teachers helping in the various classes. In recent years Gjildert deJong has been the superintendent and has taught along with many other dedicated teachers. The children are still a very important part of the Church. They often take part in the morning worship service by singing as a group before going to their classes. Myra Scott assists when music is needed, as did Dorothy McFarlane who was the former organist and choir leader. In 1989 this Church celebrated 159 years as a Congregation and also marked the 125th anniversary of the building of the present Sanctuary. This poem was written in honour of this special anniversary. St. Columba One Hundred and Twenty-five Years We thank Thee for this building Lord, It has stood the test of time. With youthful steps our forbears Walked with their hand in Thine. Generations now unseen Have worshipped in this place. For them let us take courage, Renew our hearts to run the race. Many a cloud had darkened skies In that far-off time. But the light of Faith comes shining through As we walk with our hand in Thine. Before this Sacred Altar Lord With Thy love enfolding all, Our joyful hearts lift up in praise For this building standing tall. If we should falter in our faith Or scorn Thy love divine, Help us remember this day and place As we walk with our hand in Thine. by Helen I. Stetson The following is a quote from the History of St. Columba Presbyterian Church published in 1989 upon the aforementioned anniversary of the Congregation and the Church building. "This grand old Church, which has stood with dignity for well over a century, has played an important role in the molding of many lives down through the years. Many of you have fond memories of worshipping here as a family, also of Sunday school, family weddings and Baptisms. Our prayer is that God's light may continue to brightly shine in this little corner of his vineyard."
