At the afternoon service Ludlow Jenkins gave a talk on the history of the Church. In his talk he describes the early history of the Baptist church in PEI and speaks in great detail of the individual pastors who came and went throughout the 1800’s. In particular, he mentions the Rev. Ben Scott who by 1850 was being paid the princely sum of £100 that was equally shared by the Charlottetown and the Marshfield congregations.

Of particular interest to the Marshfield area, he also lists some of the early converts to that church such as William, Grace, and Jane Scott, baptized in 1870. Later on Christy MacGregor; Jessie Stewart; Donald, Priscilla, Mary, Ellen, Eliza and Minnie Stewart; Caroline, Katie, and Emily Godfrey and in 1880, Jane McGregor and Charlotte Scott.

Mr. Jenkins ends his speech with a description of the Baptist Church in Marshfield:

“Just a word about the old church it seems it was a log building small two windows on the sides, high seats, and pulpit part of which we have here today. When vacated the roof blew off in a storm and it was torn down.

One of the pastors a Mr. Davis preached and an old friend Mr. Alex McGregor started the singing from this time assisted by Mrs. Crosby until the organ was bought 30 years ago. This carpet was bought 26 years ago. The present church building was built 65 years ago by Joseph Taylor father of the gentlemen who printed those programs. The lumber was got near Mt. Stewart and at a race for to be the first to get a load on the spot. Archie McGregor was first. The deed most fearfully and wonderfully written was deeded over to eight trustees 4 Marshfield Baptists and 2 from Covehead.”
