1960’s. Aldry, was known for her artistic talents and maintained a beautiful flower garden reported to have been one of the nicest on the Island. Ray and Aldry had a family of three daughters Carol Jean, Louanne and Cynthia plus two sons David and John (see chapter Dr. Alexander Henry Boswall and Family).
The property was sold to Lewis Brothers of York who removed the farm house and buildings which were located in the southeast comer of the property. Today the former site of the farm buildings is owned by Jewell’s Country Market where a thriving seasonal market has been established.

Old Charlottetown (And P.E.I.) F LOURISHING DAIRY FARMS
“Dairying is the principal agricultural industry of the Island, as may be inferred from the existence of the thirty-four cheese factories and five creameries, the latter operating the year round, and one-half of the cheese factories making butter in the winter; and nowhere on our travels have we seen so large a percentage of high-class dairy cows. These are principally well-bred grades of the Ayrshire, Jersey, Guernsey and Holstein breeds, while excellent herds ofpure-bred animals of all these breeds are found in the hands of enterprising breeders; the last three named breeds being well
represented on the fine dairy farm of Mr. B. Heartz. Eighty registered cows were being milked on this farm, and we can safely say it is without exception the best herd of dairy cows we have ever seen on one farm. The Provincial Government maintains a 400-acre farm here, on which are kept high—class herds of Ayrshires and Shorthorns, the surplus stock being distributed among the country agricultural societies. Mr. William Miller, who is inspector of the Government farm, has a large milk business in the city, and a beautiful farm of 105 acres some three miles distant. A fine herd of registered Ayrshires is maintained on the farm, headed by the handsome and richly bred young bulls, Pure Gold by Golden Guinea, and Jock Marshfield by Jock Morton, a well-known prize winner in the West. Mr. E. R. Brow’s fine herd of Guernseys, fresh home from their victory in the International and Provincial exhibitions, were seen grazing at ‘Eastview’, his rich and pretty farm just outside the city limits. A restful night was spent at the pleasant country home of Senator Ferguson, and a I5-mile drive across country to Pownal gave us glimpses of some of the most charming rural scenery it has ever been our lot to look upon. A brief stay at the homes of Albert Boswell and Henry Lane, near Pownal, and a hasty look through their limited but meritorious herds of Shorthorn cattle and flocks of Leicester and Shropshire sheep, completed our visit. ” — Farmers Advocate. W MACFARLANE TO BALLEM (N3)
According to the 1880 Illustrated Historical Atlas of Prince Edward Island, the James MacFarlane property on the northeast comer of the St. Peters and York Roads was recorded as “date of settlement - 1820.”
James had a large family, one of his sons, Mungo, with his sister Janet, lived in a small house on the corner of the property. This house was unoccupied for many years, and later demolished. Both Mungo and Janet are buried in the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery, part of the land for the cemetery having been donated by the MacFarlanes.
It is not recorded when Robert, James’ son, took over the property, but according to the 1880 Atlas, James was still the owner.

In the late 1890’s the original house was destroyed by fire and the present one built. Many additions and changes have been made to the house since Cedric Ballem and his son Jamie took possession.
In October 1938 Robert sold the property to Ledwell Boswall. Ledwell, his wife Carolyn and son Waldon lived there nine years.
In June 1947 Cedric Ballem, a veteran of World War II, took possession of the property from Ledwell Boswall through the Veterans Land Act (VLA). Ledwell reserved the comer lot where he and his wife Caroline built a new home and ran a small grocery store.
This comer property was sold by Ledwell in
