Properties and People Allan Stewart was born 4 November 1845,10 the son of "Big Alex Appletree " and Flora Stewart , and shared parents with thirteen siblings.14 Allan Stewart , who was listed as a grocer in the 1901 census, lived alone and operated a profitable merchandise store26 until he met a tragic death on 13 November 1904.1122 Alexander MacLaughlin was born January 15, 1829,22 the second son of Donald and brother of Robert McLaughlin . He was a shoemaker3 and may have been employed by the tannery located on the "" in Marshfield and operated by John S. McLeod ,5or at the shoemaker's shop operated by Charles Small on the northeast corner of William Scott 's farm.14 Alex married his first wife Barbara (Ferguson) in I86029 and with their two daughters, lived on the 2.1 acre property located opposite the road that led south to the Haythorne residence.7 Unfortunately, Barbara died at the early age of 49,22 leaving Alex to raise the two girls. Alex remarried in 1885 to Jane McFarlane of North Bedeque .29 However, it would only be seven years until she would be left a widow by Alex's death on December 12, 1892.22 His will instructed that the small plot be sold at a public auction and was purchased by his widow Jane McLaughlin for $275.4 She retained the property for twenty-three years until she sold it to David Ferguson in 1920.6 David Ferguson was 53 years old when he and his wife Esther (Bryenton) took possession of the property. He was a storekeeper9 and worked for a time with his brother, John T. Ferguson , who was a general merchant at a store up the road near the Presbyterian Manse . John and Esther's only daughter, Gladys,9 married Harry Muttart who took over and ran the store business until 1957.18 When David Ferguson died in 1933 at the age of 66,22 the 2.1 acres of land went up for sale and was purchased by Benjamin Mallett of Little York .8 Several years later, Mallett demolished the house and returned the land to agriculture.23 In 1949 75 bought land from Benjamin Mallett and moved the School House north across the St. Peters Road . This property remained the site for the school until the school was closed in 1984 by the opening of Lucy Maud Montgomery Consolidated School in East Royalty . In 1985 the property was put up for tender and was purchased by James Miller Jr. 30 who renovated the building into a duplex apartment. James Miller and Mary McMillan and their two children, Sarah and James continue to live there today. John MacFarlane and Roberta (Miller) lived at the corner of York and St. Peter 's Roads (N2) together with their daughter Dorothy and foster child Joanne (Lilly). John was a Justice of the Peace and operated a blacksmith shop and farm.18 When time came to retire at age 72, the homestead was sold to Ray MacCallum and they purchased a one-acre lot of land from Benjamin Mallett .31 The property was located in the southeast corner of Mallet's property on today's . John had a small one and one-half story house built while they lived for a year in the Presbyterian Manse . They continued to live in their retirement home until Roberta passed away in 1958 and John died in 1963.22 Dorothy took possession of the home and continued to live by herself until her death on April 3, 1999.22 Dorothy was a housekeeper and kept several teacher-boarders over the years that taught at the neighbouring Marshfield School. The house and property are now owned by Joanne (Lilly) and Fred Ford 33 of Harrington who have renovated and rented the property to Jim and Margaret (Duffy) McQuillan. In 1972, Bernie and Mary Maclntyre , originally from Millcove and Corran Ban , purchased a one acre lot of land from Walter Mallett that bordered on the north side of the Old St. Peters Road between Dorothy MacFarlane and Marshfield Creek .24 In 1973 they constructed a bungalow on the property and raised two children, Lynn and Ian. Lynn married Carmen Coughlin and lives in Charlottetown while Bernie, Mary and Ian still live in the Marshfield home. Rufus Strickland lived in and worked as a hired hand for Benjamin Mallett in York . In 1945, to get closer to his work, he purchased one and one-half acres of land from Mallett that is located in the southeast corner of the property next to Farm.23 Rufus and his wife Maria hauled lumber from Grand Tracadie 27 and built a house on the southeast corner of the lot, a renovated version of which remains today in the possession of Paul Burhoe . In 1952, Rufus subdivided the property and conveyed a smaller lot to his son, Curtis Strickland ,33 who built a small house to the west of Rufus and Maria. -284-
