to Walton Emerson Warren.9 Walton was one of nine children of Thomas Warren and Sarah Houston of North Rustico. Walton married Ida MacGregor Parkman (1883—1924) of New Glasgow on December 26, 190510 and they had two children, Mae and Roland.

On October 3, 1946, Hillside Farm was sold by Walton Warren to Marion and James Swan.“ The Swans owned the farm for only three years when it came into the possession of Albert and Marjorie Boswell.12 Upon selling Hillside Farm, Albert and Marjorie moved to the adjacent “Springbrook Farm.”

Sam and Martha Kennedy took over the property in 196113 and remained here for eight years. Sam had a great interest in race horses and raised standardbred race horses while he lived in Marshfield. After Sam’s death Martha maintained the farm for a number of years with the help of Dan Livingston, a veteran of WWI.

The current owners of the Hillside Farm are Gjildert and Finny deJong, they have owned the property since 1969.14 Originally from Holland, Gjildert and Finny operated “Sidmount Gardens” in Charlottetown for many years. Recently, they have been growing a substantial acreage of cole crops, particularly cabbage.

Gjildert and Finny had the following family: Ester, Ben, Patricia, Roseanne, Mitchell and Amanda.

STEWART TO MACBEATH (N10)

The first occupant of this farm was Peter Stewart Jr. The land property transactions of the Montgomery brothers show that Peter Stewart Jr. and Peter Stewart Senior were both conveyed one hundred and eighty-seven acres of land respectively on July 2, 1808.1 We know that Stewart was the first settler of the land because in the will of Robert Robertson, the next occupant, Robert states that it was Peter Stewart from whom he had purchased the property.2

Robert Robertson was a lowland Scot who emigrated from the Tayside. Robert, always signed his name, “Robert Robertson Dunkeld,”3 as he was from the small town of Dunkeld in Scotland. Although the date of his emigration is uncertain, he

settled on this property in 1841. On July 12, 1841, he purchased one hundred acres from Robert and Archibald Montgomery, “in consideration of the sum of five shillings of lawful money of the said Island.”4

Robert had the longest tenure as schoolmaster in Marshfield, having taught school for more than fifty years. Newspaper clippings throughout the 18305 and 1840s listed him as the “Schoolmaster of lot 34, on the St. Peters Road.”5

Robert married Isabella Scott, sister of William, John, and Robert Scott. They had seven children: Jane (Mrs. James McFarlane), Janet (Mrs. Richard Morson), Grace (Mrs. William Rogers), Margaret,
