[From this period some of the reports of births, marriages and deaths in Island newspapers are not given as announcements but are to be found in the general news. These are sometimes lengthy obituaries and at other times a mere reference in community news. I have tried to include that data here and have left off quotation marks for the particular items which 1 have edited or adapted. (N.H,M.)

D. “The death of John Lavers, Esq. of Georgetown. removed one of the best—known citizens of that town. Mr. Lavers was an active, energetic man and by his public spirit, industry and economy had a prominent place in the respect of his fellow-citizens. For over 20 years he was Collector of Local Assessments besides having a great deal to do with all the public affairs of the town. Since the passing of the Local Assessment Act he has been the deputy for receiving taxes for the Government and was also a JP. for King’s County. Mr. Lavers contested the elections for Georgetown in the Liberal interest at a time when it was a thoroughly Conservative borough and although unsuccessful against such well-known public men as Hon. Dan Gordon and Arch. J. Macdonald, yet he received the full vote of the Liberal Party. He was always an active Liberal since Confederation and was chosen in conjunction with Dr. P. A. Mclntyre, of Souris, to represent King's County at the great Liberal Convention held in Ottawa in 1893. Mr. Lavers was very genial and hospitable in his own home and was known to hundreds of people in all parts of the County who had received kindness from him when they visited the county town. He was a member of the Anglican Church and for many years held the offices of Church Warden and Vestryman and although during the latter years he had not taken so much interest in the work of the church, yet his contributions to all charitable projects were generous and unostcntatious. He death at age 68 is greatly regretted and his funeral on the 22nd of February last a was one of the largest ever seen in Georgetown. His wife, five sons and two daughters are left to moum the loss of an indulgent husband and father and his many friends in all parts of King’s County will not soon forget his many excellent qualities.”(Daily Patriot, Mar. 12, 1898)
