couldn‘t recognize any houses or landmarks so he went to a house that had a light and asked the way to Launching.
‘Oh, my dear man’, he was told. ‘you have to go West about ten miles, turn to the South and go another few miles then East for I don’t know how far. You’re miles and miles out of your way.’ Finally, O’Brien broke in.
‘W...We|l, tell me this mister. I’m still on Prince Edward Island, aint |?’
Your grandfather said, ‘he may have been a little confused but he got to the heart of the matter. He knew he could get home without finding a boat to get to PEI’.
Paine says, ‘l wish we were on PEl.’
When daylight came it looked better. The wind had died down. We set out for the shore. Paine was having a hard time, he was stiff and sore and stumbly.
At one point he said, ‘I don’t think I can make it. Just shoot me and leave me here.’
We sort of dragged him along, hauled the dory out and loaded up. Your grandfather in the bow and Paine in the stern. l was rowing and then I looked down and I saw the reason Paine was so stumbly and I started to laugh and laugh. He had his boots on the wrong feet. I must have been giddy with relief because I laughed a lot on the way over. It wasn‘t until we got into our kitchen and Kaddy poured him a cup of tea that he had the strength to change them.
‘Best cup of tea I ever tasted’, was his comment. I told him it was a good thing we didn’t shoot him because he had his boots on the wrong feet.’
“And you didn’t put your boots through the bottom of the dory? Aunt Kaddy must have been happy to see you coming back”.
“You could say that", he said. “I will tell you, though, there was one day in March that l was pretty glad to see Freddy Allen step ashore from Boughton Island.
Some of the stories I told you may have been a little stretched but this is a true story about Boughton Island.
The day before, the ice was still in the Bay. Freddy had come over dragging a hand-sleigh to take back a load of food. It was the tail—end of the winter and their food had run out. The ice was grey and unsafe for a horse, they figured. I took Freddy to Fay’s in
Newport with the horse and woodsleigh. It was snowing when we 48
