Chester Llewellyn family went to school there at one time or another, although they never actually lived on the Island. My older sister and brother, Frances and Lloyd, had to go to another school off the island to write their grade 10 exams. That was the rule in those days. In winter we would leave our coats on until the old wood stove was lit and the room warmed up. When Dan MacCormack was the teacher, he would light the stove. But when we had women teachers, the older boys would take turns lighting it.

My first teacher and I believe my favorite, was Hester Sigsworth from Newport. There were other teachers over the years that I recall in my time. Dollie Richard was from Georgetown. i missed her both times; she taught first before l started school, and when she came back in the early 40’s during the war, I had already left school to work the farm and fish with my father.

Dan MacCormack was from Boughton Island and taught there the most in my time. I also recall Jean White from Sturgeon, and two sisters of Dan’s Jen and Mary, who filled in for him on few days if he was sick or whatever. Then we had Betty Lighteizer from Charlottetown. She was a relation of the MacCormacks and i believe it was her first year teaching. She was the last to teach on the Island.

I must not forget the Christmas Concerts when Dan MacCormack was teacher. A tree in the corner of the school would be lit with all different colored candles. He had clamps to hold the candles on the tree. The concert started with each one holding a letter in front of them, made by Dan, our teacher. They were large letters wrapped in red tissue paper that spelled “Merry Christmas”. The concert would start with everyone singing the first Christmas song and i will try to remember some of the words:

Santa Claus is coming, we shall welcome him with glee

He will hand a gift for everyone, upon the Christmas tree

He will not forget a single soul, how happy we will be

For old Santa Claus is coming

The chorus:

Hurray, hurray, the time of all the year

Hurray, hurray, for Christmas time is here

We all shall hang our stockings up and be good girls and boys

For old Santa Claus is coming

Sometimes different classes would sing together. Then each one of 73
