I found it hard to understand I couldn’t get to Malpeque for services for three weeks because of the weather. In Eng- land the minister was always expected to be there even if no one else could make it.

Through the good services ofJohn McIntosh, one of three young men accepted into the RCMP from the community during our first year, we learned to drive the Canadian way, but not before I had driven Mr. Gamble’s car into the laneway ditch at his farm in the Prince Edward Island mud of which I became very wary. I soon learned to leave the car on the road and walk up the driveways. The Parsonage driveway was great for practicing parallel parking and backing up.

One of the images we brought from England, which had appeared in the paper not long before we left, was of the white steeple churches pointing to the sky. So it was a great delight to see the Lot 16 Church right next the manse which bore this image out. This delight soon became a concern when it was revealed that the steeple was coming away from the main building.

We enjoyed the services and remember the good congre- gations. In Lot 16 people were enthusiastic and caring for their church. This was especially encouraging for me as I centered my ministry on Preaching and Visiting. Princetown had the larger building and a fine pipe organ, but the congregation had suffered from Union. Nevertheless, they were proud of their heritage and we had great services when the weather permitted.

Administration between the two churches was centered in Summerside with Rev. Grant Walls, of North Bedeque, being the supervisory minister.

It was hard to believe that the snow and winter would eventually disappear and give way to wondrous growth, sum- mer sunshine, strawberries, ice cream, lobsters, swimming lessons at the shore for the children, camping and mosquitoes in Green Park. Then, our first journey into ‘Upper Canada’ when we left to spend Thanksgiving with our old friends, the Pipes, in Avonmore, Ontario. I am sure Arch thought we would never come back in one piece; we have never stopped travelling since.
