avenue for exploration. Her third year of study was given to pastoral care under the direction of Prince County Hospital Chaplain, Rev. Charles Wagner. Edith completed the course and was certified in 1991.
She provides summer supply in numerous Island United Church Charges and volunteers at Summerset Manor. Edith plays the organ at the Manor Fellowship Service and takes turns providing the meditation. She draws on the course in her work with the yearly Mill River Women’s Retreat and finds it’s helpful in the course of everyday life.
Edith has experienced life from many avenues. She has worked as a telephone operator, bookkeeper, farmer, and as a tireless community worker. She has served as church organist, youth leader, Presbytery representative, 4-H leader, trustee, and as a political social activist. As a lay preacher, she desires to bring knowledge of the Bible to people.
Winston Yeo
Wmston Yeo, a great-grandson of the Methodist lay preacher, Jabez Yeo, also began and completed the lay min- istry course in the same time frame as Edith. His motivation to dedicate three years to the course came from his involve- ment in youth Christian education in the Lot 16 United Church. Wmston studied under Rev. Tony Weir and quickly became aware that the depth of the Bible reaches far beyond the gleam of knowledge given by a casual read. He was intrigued by the growing knowledge that Christianity extends far beyond the pages of the Bible and the role the Holy Spirit plays in the world and the lives of people.
Unfortunately Rev. Weir accepted a call in Halifax and the course was put on hold for a period of time. However Presbytery made the decision to resume the course for those who had begun the study. Winston, after health difficulties interrupted his teaching career of thirty-three years, contin- ued his theological study; he received his certificate in 1991. In 2001, he completed a diploma course on youth ministry from the Atlantic School of Theology. Wmston has served as pulpit supply in many Island churches.
