Church Treasurer Little thought is given to the work the church treasurer does behind the scenes — pay the bills, pay the minis¬ ter, and make ends meet. United has had several long term volunteer treasur¬ ers. The first recorded name is Mrs. Percy (Fanny) Miller, followed by Doris Carr in 1937. Treasurers since: Ralph Monkley - 1938-1964 Annie Carr -1964-1976 Edith Yeo -1976 to present. ter the church property. Their main focus is the maintenance of the church building. The trustees may only sell, mortgage, or lease church property with the written permission of Pres ¬ bytery. The trustees also select their own chair, hold their own meetings, and operate their own bank accounts.1 The cemetery committee is entrusted with the maintenance of the two cemetery properties. Many hours are dedicated to the beautification of the cemeteries. An annual clean-up is car¬ ried out by volunteers under the direction of the committee. The committee attends to the record keeping, and sale of plots. While a custodian looks after the weekly care of the church, an annual clean-up is conducted by congrega¬ tion members, and each church family is assigned one week of the year to prepare the church for events and Sunday service. Representatives from United, along with representatives from North Bedeque , and Freetown sit on the Manse Committee to ensure the manse is maintained to meet the needs and comfort of the minister and family members. Other positions filled within the church by volunteers are Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School teachers, mid-week youth group leaders, choir, public speaking commit¬ tee, Pulpit Supply Committee, and special service and events committees. Each of the three churches in Bedeque Charge has representatives on the Ministry and Personnel Committee. The committee works to ensure a harmonious relationship between staff and con¬ gregation members. Because the committee works on the prin¬ ciple of confidentiality, no minutes of its proceedings are recorded other than recommendations to the Official Board.2 Lot 16 usually has a representative on Presbytery which oversees all pastoral charges on the Island. Presbytery meets monthly, and each representative serves on one or more subcommittees. 158 United Church and Its People
