Edith MacLean is the only member of the Lot 16 United Church to have attended General Council as a voting delegate. Edith was chosen as a delegate in 1990 at Maritime Conference. General Council was held that year in London, Ontario . Edith describes her involvement at General Council as "a very intense and emotional ten days of work experience. It was like being in a vacuum. 1990 Council was extremely emotional and highly charged for we were dealing with the issue of the ordination of homosexuals, and the Oka crisis. Listening to the native speakers brought it all home to me. As well, the pending Gulf War was on the minds of people. Feelings were running high and the work days were long and intense. It is an exper¬ ience I am glad to have had." Church Groups The word of the Gospel and the spirituality of fellowship is expressed and experienced in many ways within a church community. Members of church organizations attempt to do God 's work while seeking fellowship and accep¬ tance in the body of Christ. When this his¬ tory was begun, the first reflections offered by church members were memories that stemmed from involvement with church groups. Church groups have been the back¬ bone of the Lot 16 United Church. The work of church organizations has seen the property maintained, youth trained in the word of God , outreach ministry extended, and fellowship and spirituality experienced. The Lot 16 Presbyterian, Methodist, and United Church Congregations have had a variety of organizations whose activities sought to find a place for each member of the church community. Traditionally, the positions of authority were held by men, yet women and children, through their work in groups, helped build the body of the church. Due to the structure of society, it has been in many ways, easier for women and children to share talents through organized groups as they strive to take their place in the church community. Woman's Missionary Society One of the traditions carried forward into the life of the Lot 16 United Church was that of the Woman's Missionary Society. At a public meeting held in the Lot 16 Presbyterian Church on September 13, 1911, the Woman's Missionary Society was organized. The following were the officers: President: Mrs. William L.
