REFLECTION: Winston Yeo
While the Boys’ club agenda was the celebration of fellowship, there were incidents of dealing with the energy and temper of active young boys. One rainy evening two of the boys got in a tussle in the doorway of the church; the boys slipped to the wet ground and soon were covered in mud. The mothers of the two boys were probably not overly happy when their sons arrived home. That aside, many values were learned and remembered.

Boys’ Club
In the late 19705, a Boys’ Club was organized for ages twelve to sixteen. The group met in the recently finished basement of the church with activities centered around short devotionals and games. Ifweather permitted, the group met outdoors. Leaders of the group were Ron Carr, Wally MacMurdo, and Winston Yeo. Membership was not restricted to United Church boys and many youth of the community joined.
After several years the Boys’ Club disbanded but was given new life in 1993 in a joint venture with the Bel-
It is women that come to mind when I give thought to who influenced me as a youth growing up in the church, women like Jean Miller, Annie Carr; Doris Carr and Lottie McFadden. Jean Miller was our CGI T leader; she was very much a Christian woman, a proper lady, and she taught us to be young ladies. In whatever we did, she expected our best endeavour. It was a positive expectation. I/Ve had a lot of fun with her and in the process she taught us responsibility. She had a desire to see us grow up to be good citizens of our community.
Annie Carr was one of the nicest, kindest people I have ever known. She taught Sunday School and was everyone’s mom. None of us ever left her home without a
cookie in hand.
I have flind memories of Doris Carr and her extensive work with church youth. I credit Doris with starting me on my music career. We did a lot of singing with
Doris. Her fudge was ‘to die for.’
Lottie McFadden is another CGIT leader and Sunday School teacher who warmly comes to mind. We would go to her house on Sunday afternoon, stand around the piano, and start at the beginning of the hymn book and sing our way
through.
