Church memories, to me, seem always to be centered around the community and the people in it. For this reason, it seems a bit funny that the memory that first came to mind when Mom asked me to write is more around the physical space than the people inside it. My memory is one of “orange”. The orange Sunday school floor high gloss, bright neon orange, in every nook and cranny of the basement. I have always felt some responsibility for it. One afternoon, I found myself sitting on the top of the basement steps, curled up with a book. I was “on duty” so mom said. I had the important task of checking on her every twenty minutes or so to make sure she didn’t lose con- sciousness in one of those little rooms while she covered the floor with that odorous vibrant colour. I think she even paint- ed that scary little fumace room where Winston used to teach his Sunday school class! In my childhood observation, Mom and I had singlehandedly painted that basement floor. When I look back on it now, I’m sure Mom didn’t paint the entire floor alone (although there’s no doubt that she would have and could have!!). And I was probably only sitting at the top of those stairs for less than an hour that one afternoon. More than likely, a bunch of people were responsible for that shiny-orange sun- glasses-necessary floor and it probably took them a few days to do it all. Just like the making of theJunior Choir’s gowns, and the annual Christmas decorating evening and the more recent renovations. It all takes time and energy. It’s just the way the LOt 16 Church seems to work. Everyone helps out with everything When the building needs attention, the entire community is there to paint, build, or fix. That is the sense of my chuICh memory. The people of the community working together (even to paint an orange floorl). And my memory carries on from there these people don’t stop at the physical structure. They
