it was the time spent with friends and neighbours learning about what was going on within the two communities of Belmont and Central Lot 16 that was truly rewarding and the source of many memories. For instance, who could forget trying to stickhandle past Wendell Birch when his stick could easily reach from center- ice to the blueline? I also fondly remember John Gamble who usually played goal and seemed to be always in a positive friendly mood, as was his nature, even if I managed to get one past him. From another angle, in the military we truly value the char¬ acter traits of leadership and volunteerism. Both were very evident and indeed abundant in the Church back home as I recall. Neighbours helping neighbours in times of trouble and individuals standing up to be heard when a leader is needed to take charge are the key ingredients that make a difference in the life of a community. Central Lot 16 was truly blessed in both areas. There were, and I am sure still are, those who could always be counted upon when the chips were down. In my chosen profession, these attributes are essential to success for those of us entrusted to lead others. Success in any career simply boils down to the application of good old-fashioned values such as looking after the needs of others, personal sacrifice, providing honest advice, and not shying away when there is work to be done. When I think back to my Church as a boy, I don't remem¬ ber any occasion when anyone looked the other way when there was something important in the community to be done. I should add that there is no better example of community ser¬ vice than was the case under my own roof. My both parents always played a part in the church and com¬ munity, even where there were conflicts with competing person al priorities. As with many other lessons I learned from them,' got the message that there are some things more pressing than one's own interests. That example of what is simply right has stuck with me and served me well to this day. The challenge wr me now is to pass these ideals on to my teenage sons.
