marksmanship and the training and riding of horses.

During Ivan and Earl’s training course, the Prince of Wales, later to be King Edward VIII, paid an official visit to Regina. Ivan was made part of a rifle squad that took part in official ceremonies during the Prince’s visit and Earl was part of the guard that officially welcomed the Prince to the city.

Following training, Ivan was stationed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since the West was starting to open up in the 19205, much of his duty centered around immigration. Earl was posted to Fort MacLeod. Ivan’s second posting was in Kamloops, BC. He helped the Indian agents in policing the twenty-six Indian reserves located in his jurisdiction. Ivan never once drew his weapon in the line of duty. A new part of police work at that time was dealing with labour strikes brought on by the formation of labour unions.

In 1920, Royal North West Mounted Police became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Ivan left the police force after three years as he didn’t wish to assume a posting in the Far North. In a 1985 interview with the joumal—Ptbmer news- paper regarding his police experience, Ivan is quoted as say- ing, “I certainly enjoyed my time with the force. However, at that time, I didn’t think there was much of a future in it and I came back home to farm.” Ivan made farming a life-time career.

Ivan married Maisy Miller, daughter of Ed Miller and Blanche Colwill. Ivan and Maisy lived on the Lyle Road. They had three children: Leigh, Edward, and Thelma. Leigh married Ruby Campbell; they have one daughter Diane (Donald Murphy). Leigh and Ruby attend Lot 16 United. In the 19505, Eddie and his father purchased the James Higgins place in Belmont. Eddie married Ruby Best (see Best History). They both sing in the choir. Eddie has been an elder, a steward, and chairperson for many church meetings. He was an MLA for many years (see Politicians chp.10) and is presently on the Ministry and Personnel Committee at Lot 16 United. Ruby and Eddie have three daughters: Colleen (Iohn Hogg), Cathy (Paul Stordy), and Lynne; a son, Merrill Edward, died in infancy. Lynne mar- ried Kent Paynter and they live in Grand River with their
