Alexander and Sarah Crossman
Alexander Crossman emigrated from Scotland, married Sarah Rayner, and cleared and took title to land on the Ferry Road adjacent to the Willie MacLean property. In 1907, he was a trustee of SLJames Methodist Church. The Crossman’s had three sons: William, Hubert and Edward.
The 1880 Atlas shows both Alexander and son, William, owning property on the Ferry Road. Wllliam married Mar- garet McNeill and had seven children: Amelia, Laura, Maude, Alfred, Ida, Mae, and Eliza.
Ida and Eliza remained in Lot 16. Ida married Herbert Best; they had a son Ernest and a daughter Amy. Herb died in 1922, at the age of forty-two years. His father’s diary entry of April 11, 1922 indicates that Herb was sick and that his sis— ter Fanny Simmons was helping to attend him at his home. After her husband’s death, Ida married Frank Sweet from O’Leary; the couple lived in St. Eleanor’s.
Eliza married James Skerry. Shortly after they were mar- ried, they moved a house onto the Crossman property and lived there until about 1917. They had two children who remained in Lot 16, George and Eileen. George was a car- penter and a fisherman. He built several houses as well as many fishing boats in Lot 16. He and his wife, Carrie Broome, had one son, Eric. Eileen married Jack Manderson (see Manderson History).
Sometime after 1880, Hubert moved to a property which is now part of the Community Pasture on the Lyle Road. He had a lobster factory at the shore and canned lobsters for many years. Hubert married Ellen MacLean of the Allan Road (not related to the Allan MacLean family). They had four children: Fred, Nina, Walter, and Ella. All‘but Ella moved to the USA. During the depression, Fred returned to Lot 16 for a few years and lived at home with his parents. While on PEI, he built the Amett Simpson house in Belmont. Hubert
