house was located (almost opposite thejason MacLeod prop— erty of 2002). The 1881 census cites that Allan Fraser was a mason which could explain the existence of a fireplace in most rooms of the Fraser house which was torn down by a winter
works program in 1965.
Allan and his wife Sarah are believed to be buried in unmarked graves in Lot 16 United Cemetery. A report from The Islander newspaper of May 3, 1861 shows the grief brought to the family by death. “Death: At Lot 16 on 15 April, Sarah, age 11 years and on the 21, Elce, age 7 years, both of Diptera, the beloved children of Allan and Sarah of the same place.”
Allan Sr. passed his lease on thejames Auld land to his son Allanjr. in 1870. This is the present Norman MacLeod prop- erty in Belmont. Mervin Inman, Allan Sr.’s great-grandson, relates some of the history of the family. “Allan Fraser II mar- ried Eva Auld. He built the house later owned by Norman MacLeod. There was one boy, Harry, in their family, and seven girls. Harry went up to Lew Yeo’s to stay overnight. The Yeo boys, Alvin and Wilfred, had diptheria; they survived but Harry contracted the disease and died. With the death of Harry, the girls, including my mother Florence, had to help clear the land. Allan Jr. and his family moved to Bedeque in the early 1900’s.” Florence later married Ernest Inman (see Inman History).
Allan Sr. and Sarah also had a daughter, Mary. The 1881 census indicated that Mary, age thirty-four, along with her children, Howard Fraser ( age seven) and Leonard Fraser ( age three), lived with Allan Sr. and Sarah. Howard assumed his father’s property in later years. Leonard did not remain in the community. Howard remained a bachelor and was a strong, active man who, being extremely proud of his Scottish her- itage, often wore a kilt. He visited his neighbours often and entertained with his stepdancing and bagpipes. He was listed as an adherent of St. James Methodist Church.
